Overview

Focetria is an MF59-adjuvanted, monovalent, inactivated subunit H5N1 pandemic influenza vaccine. Developed by Novartis Vaccines (now part of CSL Seqirus), it contains hemagglutinin (HA) surface antigens from the H5N1 influenza virus. It was the first "mock-up" pandemic vaccine approved by the European Union in 2007, a regulatory designation allowing for rapid strain adaptation once a specific pandemic viral strain is identified by the WHO. The vaccine utilizes the proprietary MF59 adjuvant, an oil-in-water emulsion that enhances the immune response and enables antigen-sparing, allowing for effective protection with significantly lower doses of HA (3.75-7.5 μg) compared to non-adjuvanted vaccines. It is designed to prevent avian influenza infection and induce cross-reactive antibody responses against heterologous H5N1 strains.
