Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Foclivia and Aflunov are brand names for a pre-pandemic, monovalent, egg-based influenza A (H5N1) vaccine adjuvanted with MF59. Developed by CSL Seqirus (a CSL Behring company), the vaccine contains inactivated surface antigens (hemagglutinin and neuraminidase) from the H5N1 'bird flu' strain. The MF59 adjuvant, a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion, is included to enhance the immune response, allowing for dose-sparing and broader protection against drifted strains. Foclivia was originally registered as a 'mock-up' pandemic vaccine, while Aflunov was registered for pre-pandemic use. They are indicated for active immunization against H5N1 influenza in individuals from 6 months of age, typically administered as a two-dose regimen given at least three weeks apart.
