Overview

Foeniculum vulgare seed extract (FVE), commonly known as fennel seed extract, is a botanical preparation being investigated for its anti-cancer properties, specifically against hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Research indicates that ethanol extracts of these seeds reduce cell viability, inhibit cell migration, and induce apoptosis in malignant cells. The mechanism of action involves the down-regulation of the oncoprotein survivin (BIRC5), which triggers mitochondrial toxicity and leads to the activation of caspase-3. In vivo studies using HCC xenograft models in nude mice have shown that the extract significantly inhibits tumor growth while exhibiting minimal toxicity to normal liver cells. This selective apoptotic effect suggests potential for the extract as a targeted therapeutic agent in oncology.
