FOL026 is a synthetic peptide-based drug candidate developed for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, particularly targeting vascular repair and regeneration. It is designed to be administered intravenously, allowing systemic effects throughout the body. Mechanistically, FOL026 binds specifically to neuropilin-1 (NRP-1), a co-receptor for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptors. By binding to NRP-1 at the VEGF binding site, FOL026 activates biological responses similar to those triggered by VEGF family members—promoting blood vessel repair, stimulating angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels), and supporting tissue revitalization. Preclinical studies have shown that FOL026 can stimulate endothelial cell growth and migration, inhibit apoptosis in vascular cells, promote muscular repair, and protect vessel walls from stressors such as high glucose or lipid levels (glucolipotoxicity). The drug has demonstrated potential therapeutic benefits in conditions requiring enhanced vascular repair or angiogenesis—including myocardial infarction and renal fibrosis—and may also reduce complications associated with diabetes by improving vascular health[1][3][6][7].
