Folic acid + ZW800-1 (also known as ZW-FA) is a targeted near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging agent designed for the detection of cells expressing the folate receptor-alpha (FR-α). It consists of folic acid, which serves as a high-affinity targeting ligand, conjugated to ZW800-1, a zwitterionic NIR fluorophore. The ZW800-1 dye is characterized by its balanced electrical charge, which minimizes non-specific binding to serum proteins and tissues, thereby providing a superior signal-to-background ratio compared to traditional dyes like indocyanine green (ICG). ZW-FA is primarily being investigated for the in vitro diagnosis of endometrial cancer by identifying FR-α overexpression in cytological samples. By binding specifically to FR-α, the agent allows for the visualization and quantification of malignant cells using fluorescence intensity, potentially improving the sensitivity and specificity of endometrial lesion screening.
