Folic acid nanoceria is a nanoparticle drug formulation comprised of cerium oxide nanoparticles (nanoceria) chemically conjugated to folic acid. This design enables **targeted delivery** to cells that overexpress the folate receptor, such as ovarian cancer cells and other malignancies, as well as some bacterial and wound tissues. Nanoceria exhibit catalytic antioxidant properties, primarily through scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), which modulate oxidative stress and cell signaling. Folic acid tagging increases the cellular uptake of nanoceria via folate receptor-mediated endocytosis, enhancing the drug’s selective activity against cancer cells. The formulation has been shown preclinically to inhibit tumor proliferation, angiogenesis, and colony formation in ovarian cancer models, and demonstrates wound healing and antibacterial activity, acting through combined antioxidant and redox mechanisms. The drug has also been explored for delivery of chemotherapeutics and as an adjunct to cisplatin in cancer treatment. Currently, it is an investigational drug not yet approved for therapeutic use[1][2][3][5][7].
