Overview

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. It plays a central role in human reproduction and sexual development. In females, FSH stimulates the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, which are necessary for ovulation and estrogen production. In males, it acts on Sertoli cells in the testes to promote spermatogenesis. The secretion of FSH is regulated by gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) from the hypothalamus as part of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis[1][3][8]. Therapeutically, exogenous forms of FSH—either recombinant or purified from urine—are used to treat infertility by inducing ovulation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF or IUI[5].
