FSH + LH refers to the combined administration of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), two essential gonadotropins used in controlled ovarian stimulation for assisted reproductive technology (ART). FSH primarily drives the recruitment and growth of multiple ovarian follicles by binding to the FSH receptor (FSHR) on granulosa cells. LH, acting through the LH/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR), supports the production of androgens (which are converted to estrogens) and is thought to improve oocyte quality and pregnancy rates, particularly in women over 35 or those with a poor response to FSH alone. This combination is available as human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG), derived from the urine of postmenopausal women, or as a fixed-ratio recombinant product (e.g., follitropin alfa and lutropin alfa). Clinical research, such as studies conducted by Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, continues to investigate the metabolic effects of this combination on cumulus cells to optimize IVF outcomes.
