Overview

Follitropin alfa is a recombinant form of human follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), produced using genetically engineered Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. It consists of two non-covalently linked glycoprotein subunits (alpha and beta) that are structurally identical to endogenous human FSH. Follitropin alfa acts by binding to the Follicle-stimulating hormone receptor on ovarian granulosa cells in women and testicular Sertoli cells in men. This stimulates ovarian follicular growth and maturation in women with ovulatory dysfunction or undergoing assisted reproductive technology (ART), such as IVF or embryo transfer. In men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, it promotes spermatogenesis when used after pretreatment with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). The drug is indicated for multifollicular development during ART procedures and for induction of ovulation or spermatogenesis where infertility is not due to primary gonadal failure[1][2][3][5][6].
