Overview
Folsmart is a targeted liposomal formulation of the small molecule antimetabolite methotrexate, developed by SOLFARCOS for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. The drug utilizes a targeted liposomal delivery system designed to selectively accumulate in inflamed synovial tissues, thereby increasing local therapeutic concentrations while minimizing the systemic toxicity typically associated with conventional methotrexate therapy. Methotrexate acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which is essential for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines. By disrupting DNA synthesis and cell proliferation, Folsmart aims to suppress the immune cell activity that drives joint inflammation and destruction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
