Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fomes officinalis extract (also known as Agarikon extract) is a botanical extract derived from the pulp of the *Fomes officinalis* (or *Laricifomes officinalis*) mushroom, a bracket fungus that grows on larch and conifer trees. It is widely used as a cosmetic and personal care ingredient for its astringent, pore-tightening, and sebum-regulating properties. In dermatological applications, the extract acts as an adaptive sebum modulator, suppressing excessive sebum secretion while maintaining basal lipid production [1.1]. This is achieved through the upregulation of microRNA-29 (miR-29), which downregulates the SCAP/SREBP-1 lipogenic cascade (including SREBP-1, SCAP, ACC, FASN, and PPAR-γ) [1.1]. It is developed by companies such as Simcare Biotechnology Group and supplied by ingredient manufacturers like BASF and Cobiosa for use in topical skincare formulations targeting oily, combination, and sensitive skin, as well as acne vulgaris.
