fondaparinux + carboplatin + paclitaxel

This combination regimen consists of the anticoagulant fondaparinux (Arixtra) and the chemotherapy agents carboplatin and paclitaxel. It was evaluated in a Phase I feasibility study led by the University of Alabama at Birmingham for patients with advanced (Stage IV) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). The primary objective of adding fondaparinux to the standard chemotherapy backbone is to prevent venous thromboembolism (VTE), a common complication in cancer patients. Fondaparinux is a synthetic pentasaccharide that acts as a selective factor Xa inhibitor by binding to antithrombin III. Carboplatin is a platinum-based alkylating agent that causes DNA cross-linking, while paclitaxel is a taxane that stabilizes microtubules, both of which inhibit cell division.
