Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Foradil Certihaler is a breath-activated, multi-dose dry powder inhaler (DPI) containing formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA). Developed by Novartis in collaboration with SkyePharma, the product utilizes the SkyeHaler device and SkyeProtect technology, which incorporates a desiccant to protect the drug powder from moisture, ensuring dose consistency. Formoterol acts as a potent bronchodilator by selectively stimulating beta2-receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to an increase in intracellular cyclic AMP and subsequent relaxation of the airways. It is indicated for the long-term treatment of asthma and the prevention of bronchospasm in adults and children aged 5 years and older, as well as for the maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
