Overview
Foradil Combi is a sequential combination therapy developed by Novartis for the treatment of moderate persistent asthma. It consists of two separate active ingredients delivered via the Aerolizer dry powder inhaler device: formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist (LABA), and budesonide, an inhaled corticosteroid (ICS). Unlike fixed-dose combination products where both drugs are combined in a single formulation, this regimen involves taking formoterol and budesonide as separate sequential inhalations from individual capsules through the same device. Formoterol provides sustained bronchodilation by stimulating beta-2 receptors in the airway smooth muscle, while budesonide exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects by activating glucocorticoid receptors, thereby reducing airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation.
