Foreskin fibroblast (neonatal) refers to primary human dermal fibroblasts isolated from the dermis of neonatal foreskin tissue. These cells are used in both research and clinical settings, most notably as a component of advanced wound care products such as Dermagraft and Gintuit. As a cell therapy or biologic device, they are indicated for the treatment of full-thickness diabetic foot ulcers that extend through the dermis but do not expose tendon, muscle, joint capsule, or bone[1][2]. Foreskin-derived neonatal fibroblasts secrete extracellular matrix proteins and growth factors that support tissue repair and regeneration. They can differentiate into various cell types and display mesenchymal stromal cell characteristics[5][6]. In addition to wound healing applications, these cells are widely used in research on skin aging, gene delivery, pathogen response studies, regenerative medicine product development (including exosomes/micro-vesicles), cosmetics testing, and as feeder layers for pluripotent stem cell culture[3][4][5][8]. The main mechanism is via paracrine secretion of growth factors supporting angiogenesis and tissue repair. Developed by Advanced BioHealing, Organogenesis, Lonza, and ATCC.
