Overview

Formebolone is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) derived from androstane. It is orally active and has been used as an anticatabolic and anabolic agent, particularly in the treatment of growth retardation and to increase bone mass. Its mechanism of action involves binding to androgen receptors in muscle and bone tissues, which stimulates protein synthesis and promotes muscle hypertrophy. Additionally, formebolone exhibits antiglucocorticoid activity by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1, thereby reducing cortisol-mediated catabolism. It has been marketed under various brand names in Spain and Italy but is now classified as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency due to its potential for misuse in sports[1][2][3][4][5][6].
