Overview

Formulation A is an experimental topical cream containing 1.0% salicylic acid, developed by researchers at Northwestern University for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that exerts its therapeutic effect through keratolytic activity, softening and dissolving the intercellular cement that holds epithelial cells together in the stratum corneum. This process facilitates the shedding of dead skin cells and the clearance of comedones, which are central to the pathogenesis of acne. Formulation A was evaluated in a Phase 2 split-face, paired-comparison pilot trial (NCT00881153) to assess its safety and efficacy relative to another 1.0% salicylic acid cream (Formulation B) in a pediatric and young adult population aged 13 to 35.
