Overview

Formulation B is an experimental topical cream containing 1.0% salicylic acid, developed by Northwestern University for the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. It was evaluated in a split-face, paired-comparison pilot study (NCT01141023) to assess its safety and efficacy relative to another 1.0% salicylic acid formulation (Formulation A). As a beta-hydroxy acid, salicylic acid functions as a keratolytic agent by promoting the desquamation of the stratum corneum and penetrating the pilosebaceous unit to dissolve comedones. This action helps to clear existing acne lesions and prevent the formation of new ones by reducing follicular occlusion.
