Overview

Formycin B is a naturally occurring C-nucleoside antibiotic produced by several Streptomyces species. It features a pyrazolopyrimidine ring system and is structurally related to adenosine. Formycin B exhibits antiparasitic activity—particularly against Leishmania species—by acting as an adenosine analog. In Leishmania parasites it is converted to its monophosphate form and then further metabolized into cytotoxic nucleotide analogs of formycin A that are incorporated into RNA. This disrupts nucleic acid metabolism and inhibits parasite growth. Formycin B has also demonstrated general antibiotic properties but remains experimental with no approved clinical indications[1][2][3][4][6].
