Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fortacin is a topical metered-dose aerosol spray containing a eutectic-like mixture of the local anesthetics lidocaine (150 mg/mL) and prilocaine (50 mg/mL). It is specifically indicated for the treatment of primary (lifelong) premature ejaculation in adult men. Developed by Plethora Solutions and marketed by Recordati in Europe, the spray is applied to the glans penis approximately five minutes before intercourse. Its mechanism of action involves the reversible blockade of voltage-gated sodium channels in the sensory nerve fibers of the non-keratinized skin of the glans penis, which reduces sensitivity and increases the intravaginal ejaculatory latency time (IELT) without significantly affecting the sensation of ejaculation. Clinical trials have demonstrated significant improvements in ejaculatory control and sexual satisfaction compared to placebo. The product was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in 2013 and launched in the United Kingdom in 2016.
