Overview

Fosamprenavir is an antiretroviral medication used in combination with other drugs to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1) infection in adults and children. It is a prodrug of amprenavir, which means it is converted in the body to its active form, amprenavir. Amprenavir acts as an inhibitor of HIV-1 protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication. By binding to the active site of HIV-1 protease, it prevents the processing of viral Gag and Gag-Pol polyprotein precursors, resulting in immature and non-infectious viral particles. Fosamprenavir does not cure HIV/AIDS but helps reduce the amount of virus in the blood and may delay progression to AIDS or related illnesses. The drug was developed by ViiV Healthcare. Fosamprenavir has been approved for use but is no longer commonly recommended as first-line therapy for HIV due to newer agents with improved efficacy and safety profiles. It requires combination with other antiretroviral medications for effective treatment.
