Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Fosamprenavir (GW433908)** is a water-soluble, phosphate ester prodrug of the HIV-1 protease inhibitor **amprenavir**. It is formulated to reduce pill burden and enhance adherence. When combined with **abacavir** and **lamivudine**, both nucleoside analogue reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), this regimen is used for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Fosamprenavir acts by inhibiting the HIV-1 protease, thereby preventing the viral maturation process required for infectious virion production. Abacavir and lamivudine block reverse transcriptase, halting viral genome replication. Clinical studies demonstrated this combination is potent and generally well tolerated[1][2][4][5].
