Overview
Foscarnet sodium is an antiviral medication used primarily for the treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in immunocompromised patients, especially those with AIDS. It is also indicated for mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections that are resistant to acyclovir in immunocompromised individuals. Foscarnet is a pyrophosphate analogue that selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerases by binding to the pyrophosphate binding site, thereby blocking viral DNA synthesis without requiring activation by phosphorylation. This mechanism allows it to be effective against certain drug-resistant strains of CMV and HSV. The drug does not cure CMV or HSV but helps control their progression[1][2][5][7].
