fosfomycin trometamol

**Fosfomycin trometamol** is the orally administered trometamol salt of fosfomycin, a synthetic phosphonic-acid, bactericidal antibiotic. After absorption, it releases fosfomycin, which covalently and irreversibly inhibits bacterial UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase, blocking an early step in peptidoglycan cell-wall synthesis. The oral product is used principally as a single-dose treatment for acute uncomplicated bacterial cystitis and produces high urinary concentrations through renal excretion of unchanged fosfomycin. In the cited investigator-sponsored kidney-transplant study, fosfomycin trometamol was evaluated as urinary-tract-infection prophylaxis versus sulfamethoxazole + trimethoprim.
