Overview

Fosfructose (fructose-1,6-bisphosphate) is a naturally occurring glycolytic intermediate that acts as a metabolic regulator and cytoprotective agent. When administered exogenously, it bypasses the rate-limiting phosphofructokinase step in glycolysis, facilitating the restoration of intracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels during states of metabolic stress, ischemia, or hypoxia. It also functions as an allosteric activator of pyruvate kinase and has been shown to modulate the inflammatory response and reduce oxidative stress. Developed primarily by Biomedica Foscama, it is indicated for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, various forms of ischemia-reperfusion injury, and as a component of parenteral nutrition to support cellular metabolism in critically ill patients.
