Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Foshou Ningshen is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by Nanfang Hospital of Southern Medical University. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of primary insomnia and nonorganic insomnia, particularly when associated with liver stagnation syndrome (肝郁证) or liver stagnation and spleen deficiency. The formulation typically centers on *Citrus medica* var. *sarcodactylis* (Foshou or Finger Citron), which is traditionally used to soothe the liver and regulate Qi. Pharmacological studies suggest that the formula exerts its sedative and hypnotic effects by modulating neurotransmitter systems, including increasing gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels and regulating serotonin (5-HT) receptors in the brain. It is commonly administered in granule form and has been evaluated in clinical trials within China to assess its efficacy in improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety symptoms related to liver-qi stagnation.
