fosinopril

Fosinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and congestive heart failure in adults and children aged 6 years and older. It is a phosphinic acid-containing ester prodrug that is rapidly hydrolyzed in the body to its active metabolite, fosinoprilat. Fosinoprilat acts as a specific competitive inhibitor of ACE, blocking the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II—a potent vasoconstrictor involved in blood pressure regulation via the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). By inhibiting ACE, fosinopril decreases levels of angiotensin II, leading to vasodilation, reduced aldosterone secretion, lower blood pressure, and decreased cardiac workload. This mechanism also helps slow progression of renal disease in hypertensive patients with diabetes mellitus.
