Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fotil is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic solution containing pilocarpine hydrochloride (a parasympathomimetic/muscarinic receptor agonist) and timolol maleate (a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist). Originally developed by Leiras in Finland, the product's development and marketing were continued by Santen following its acquisition of Leiras's ophthalmic business. Fotil is indicated for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, angle-closure glaucoma, and ocular hypertension. The two active ingredients lower intraocular pressure (IOP) through complementary mechanisms: pilocarpine acts as a miotic to increase aqueous humor outflow by contracting the ciliary muscle, while timolol decreases aqueous humor production by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors in the ciliary epithelium. Fotil is administered as eye drops, typically dosed twice daily.
