Overview

FP9-PP is a prophylactic vaccine candidate developed by the University of Oxford for the prevention of malaria, specifically targeting Plasmodium falciparum. It utilizes a poxvirus vector (FP9) to deliver a polyprotein transgene encoding six pre-erythrocytic antigens from P. falciparum, aiming to stimulate an immune response against malaria infection. The mechanism of action is immunostimulation via antigen presentation, designed to elicit cellular immunity against multiple malaria antigens. In clinical studies, FP9-PP was used in a heterologous prime-boost regimen with MVA-PP (another poxvirus-based vaccine expressing the same polyprotein). While the vaccines were found to be safe and immunogenic, efficacy in preventing malaria infection was not demonstrated in early trials[1][3].
