Overview

FR-234938 is a small molecule non-nucleoside inhibitor of adenosine deaminase (ADA) with anti-inflammatory activity. It was developed using rational structure-based drug design to competitively inhibit recombinant human ADA. By inhibiting ADA, FR-234938 increases extracellular adenosine concentrations, which can modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation. Preclinical studies have shown that it inhibits interleukin (IL)-6-dependent immunoglobulin M production in the presence of adenosine and suppresses cytokine production such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and IL-10 in animal models. These properties suggest potential utility as an anti-rheumatic and anti-inflammatory agent[5][2][4].
