Drug intelligence / Profile preview
FreAmine HBC is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, hypertonic solution containing crystalline amino acids designed for parenteral nutrition. It contains a high concentration of branched chain amino acids (isoleucine, leucine, and valine) relative to other general purpose amino acid injections. The 6.9% FreAmine HBC solution is specifically formulated to provide essential and nonessential amino acids in concentrated form for protein synthesis. When appropriately mixed with a concentrated calorie source such as hypertonic dextrose, with or without fat emulsion, and supplemented with electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals, it provides total parenteral nutrition for severely compromised patients. FreAmine HBC is indicated to prevent nitrogen loss or treat negative nitrogen balance in adults where: 1. The alimentary tract cannot or should not be used 2. Gastrointestinal absorption of protein is impaired 3. Nitrogen homeostasis is substantially impaired (as with severe trauma or sepsis) The solution can be administered either through central venous infusion (when mixed with hypertonic dextrose for hypercatabolic or severely depleted patients) or through peripheral parenteral nutrition (for moderately catabolic or depleted patients). Side effects and precautions include potential aluminum toxicity with long-term use, and the medication should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease, liver disease, high blood ammonia levels, low blood volume, certain amino acid metabolism problems, blood acid or electrolyte problems, too much fluid in the lungs, or trouble passing urine.
