FRECLOVIR

FRECLOVIR is a generic antiviral medication manufactured by the Vietnamese pharmaceutical company Fremed. It contains acyclovir, a synthetic purine nucleoside analogue that exhibits inhibitory activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 (HSV-1) and 2 (HSV-2), as well as varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Acyclovir functions as a prodrug; it is selectively converted into acyclovir monophosphate by viral thymidine kinase, and subsequently into acyclovir triphosphate by host cell kinases. Acyclovir triphosphate acts as a competitive inhibitor of viral DNA polymerase and, more importantly, is incorporated into the growing viral DNA chain, where it acts as a potent chain terminator due to the lack of a 3'-hydroxyl group. This mechanism effectively halts viral replication. FRECLOVIR is commercially available in 200 mg and 400 mg tablet formulations for the treatment of various herpetic infections.
