Drug intelligence / Profile preview
FBR-Ohio State University-oral intraepithelial neoplasia is a topical mucoadhesive gel containing 10% w/w freeze-dried black raspberries (FBR), developed by researchers at The Ohio State University for the chemoprevention of oral intraepithelial neoplasia (OIN). The formulation utilizes the natural phytochemical profile of black raspberries, specifically anthocyanins, ferulic acid, and beta-sitosterol, to exert anti-carcinogenic effects. It is designed to provide sustained contact with the oral mucosa through a mucoadhesive preparation combining FBR with a saliva substitute and methylcellulose. Clinical studies have demonstrated its ability to reduce lesion size, improve histologic grade, and decrease loss of heterozygosity (LOH) events in premalignant oral lesions. Its mechanism of action involves the downregulation of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) protein expression and the modulation of genes involved in cell cycle regulation and inflammation.
