Overview

Habu antivenom is an equine-derived, freeze-dried antivenom used for the treatment of envenomation caused by the Habu snake (*Protobothrops flavoviridis*), a highly venomous pit viper native to the Ryukyu Islands of Japan (including Okinawa and Kagoshima). Originally developed by The Chemo-Sero-Therapeutic Research Institute (Kaketsuken) and currently manufactured and developed by KM Biologics, the antivenom is produced by purifying immunoglobulins from the serum of horses immunized with Habu venom or toxoid. It is highly stable in its lyophilized form and is reconstituted with sterile water before administration. The antivenom works by binding to and neutralizing the lethal and hemorrhagic toxins present in Habu venom, preventing systemic toxicity and local tissue damage.
