Overview

Freeze-dried platelet-derived factor concentrate (PFC-FD) is an autologous biologic product derived from the patient's own blood, processed centrally to isolate and concentrate the noncoagulating, growth factor-rich portion of platelets, and then stabilized by freeze-drying (lyophilization). This process extends the shelf life (up to 6–12 months at room temperature) and enables off-the-shelf convenience compared to standard PRP. The principal mechanism of action is mediated by a concentrated pool of platelet-derived growth factors and cytokines, which act to reduce inflammation, modulate the joint environment, and promote tissue repair and healing, particularly in musculoskeletal conditions such as knee osteoarthritis. PFC-FD is prepared by taking patient blood, centrifuging to obtain PRP, removing most cellular components, activating with calcium chloride, and then freeze-drying for later reconstitution and intra-articular injection[1][3][5]. Clinical studies indicate measurable improvement in pain and function for a subset of treated patients, particularly those with early-stage osteoarthritis[1][3][5]. The product is decellularized, noncoagulating, and primarily targets anti-inflammatory and regenerative pathways; it does not appear to directly regenerate cartilage but acts mostly via modulation of inflammation and anabolic repair[5].
