Overview
Freeze-dried probiotic sachets are a microbial therapy being evaluated by Cairo University for the management of gingival inflammation and the reduction of dental plaque caries potentiality. The intervention consists of a freeze-dried powder containing probiotic microorganisms, which is reconstituted with water and used as an oral rinse (swish) for one minute before being swallowed. This dual-action approach aims to modulate the oral microbiota locally to reduce pathogenic bacteria associated with gingival bleeding while also potentially providing systemic benefits. The therapy is specifically being studied in adolescent populations (aged 12-15) as a controlled alternative to probiotic-containing fermented dairy products like yogurt.
