Freeze-dried tissue-engineered bone is a regenerative medical product developed for the repair of bone defects. It typically consists of an allogeneic or synthetic bone scaffold seeded with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which is then subjected to a specialized freeze-drying process. This process is designed to preserve the three-dimensional microarchitecture of the scaffold and the bioactive factors, such as bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), secreted by the cells, while allowing for long-term storage and off-the-shelf clinical use. Upon implantation, the product provides an osteoconductive framework and osteoinductive signals that promote the recruitment and differentiation of host osteogenic cells, facilitating bone tissue regeneration. It was notably developed by the Fourth Military Medical University and Shaanxi Aierfu Tissue Engineering in China and received NMPA approval as a Class III medical device.
