Overview

Freeze Off is an over-the-counter cryogenic treatment used for the removal of common and plantar warts. It typically consists of a pressurized aerosol canister containing a mixture of dimethyl ether and propane (DMEP). When applied via a specialized applicator, the refrigerant mixture rapidly evaporates, reaching temperatures as low as -55°C to -70°C. This extreme cold induces localized cryonecrosis, freezing the wart tissue and the underlying Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infected cells. The process causes the formation of an ice ball within the skin, leading to cellular dehydration, protein denaturation, and vascular stasis. Following treatment, a blister usually forms beneath the wart, and the dead tissue sloughs off within 10 to 14 days, allowing for the regeneration of healthy skin tissue.
