It is traditionally classified as a 'heat-clearing and phlegm-transforming' agent, used to treat respiratory conditions characterized by thick, yellow sputum and persistent cough. The Affiliated Hospital of Jiangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is investigating its clinical efficacy in treating a range of lung diseases, including acute tracheobronchitis, post-infectious cough, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), specifically in patients presenting with phlegm-heat syndrome.
