Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP) is a blood product derived from the liquid portion of whole blood, frozen shortly after collection to maintain the activity of labile coagulation factors. It contains a full complement of clotting factors, including fibrinogen, prothrombin, and Factors V, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, and XIII, along with physiological anticoagulants such as protein C, protein S, and antithrombin. FFP is used therapeutically to manage or prevent bleeding in patients with multiple coagulation factor deficiencies, such as those seen in liver disease, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), or during the urgent reversal of vitamin K antagonists like warfarin. The Mayo Clinic has conducted clinical research (NCT02740920) to evaluate the clinical outcomes of restrictive versus liberal FFP transfusion strategies in hospitalized patients with mildly elevated International Normalized Ratio (INR) levels undergoing low-risk invasive procedures.
