Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fresh frozen plasma + cryoprecipitate is a combination of two blood component products derived from human donor blood. Fresh frozen plasma (FFP) is the liquid portion of whole blood that is separated and rapidly frozen within 8 hours of collection to preserve all coagulation factors. It contains all clotting factors in normal concentrations and is used primarily to treat patients with deficiencies in multiple coagulation factors who are bleeding or at risk of bleeding, especially when specific factor concentrates are unavailable[1][3][10]. Cryoprecipitate ("cryo") is prepared by slowly thawing FFP at low temperatures (1–6°C), which causes certain cold-insoluble proteins—mainly fibrinogen, Factor VIII, Factor XIII, von Willebrand factor (vWF), and fibronectin—to precipitate out. This precipitated fraction is then collected, resuspended in a small volume of plasma, refrozen for storage, and later transfused as a concentrated source of these specific clotting proteins[4][5][7]. The combination therapy provides both broad-spectrum replacement of all coagulation factors (via FFP) as well as targeted supplementation with high levels of fibrinogen and other key clotting proteins (via cryoprecipitate). This approach may be used in settings such as major hemorrhage protocols or disseminated intravascular coagulation where rapid correction of coagulopathy involving multiple pathways is required[8][9].
