Overview

Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) is a naturally occurring oligosaccharide composed of short chains of fructose molecules with a terminal glucose unit. It is found in various plants such as onion, chicory, garlic, asparagus, banana, and artichoke. FOS is not digested by human enzymes in the small intestine; instead it reaches the colon intact where it serves as a prebiotic—feeding beneficial gut bacteria like Bifidobacteria. Its fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids that support gut health and may improve mineral absorption[3][7][8]. FOS has been associated with several physiological benefits including improved bowel regularity (relief from constipation), reduced blood sugar spikes due to its indigestibility and low caloric value, potential cholesterol-löwering effects, enhanced mineral absorption (notably calcium), and possible immune modulation[1][2][3][5]. It is widely used as a dietary fiber supplement and alternative sweetener in food products due to its mild sweetness (30–50% that of sucrose) and non-cariogenic properties[10].
