Overview

Fructus Akebiae (预知子) is the dried nearly mature fruit of plants in the genus Akebia (Akebia quinata Thunb. Decne., Akebia trifoliata Thunb. Koidz., or their varieties), belonging to the family Lardizabalaceae. It is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb classified as a "regulating qi" drug and is used for its properties of soothing liver qi stagnation (疏肝理气), promoting blood circulation and relieving pain (活血止痛), resolving masses and promoting urination (散结利尿). Its main active components are triterpenes and saponins; α-hederin saponin content must not be less than 0.20% in official preparations[5][6]. Modern pharmacological studies indicate it has antibacterial[5], anti-inflammatory[5], antitumor[5], and antidepressant effects[5]. Clinically it is used for conditions such as hypochondriac pain due to liver qi stagnation or blood stasis; amenorrhea/dysmenorrhea; abdominal masses; urinary difficulty/edema; as well as externally for insect/snake bites.
