Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Fructus Crataegi (山楂, shan zha) is the dried ripe fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida or related species. Widely used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), it is known for promoting digestion and resolving food stagnation—especially from overconsumption of meat and fatty foods. It also activates blood circulation and resolves blood stasis. Modern research suggests that Fructus Crataegi may have cardiovascular benefits such as improving coronary blood flow, lowering blood pressure by vasodilation, reducing cholesterol levels through increased bile excretion and LDL receptor activity, and providing antioxidant effects[1][2][4][5]. It has shown promise in supporting heart function in mild congestive heart failure (NYHA class II), regulating lipid metabolism, aiding digestion, enhancing appetite, contracting the uterus postpartum, and possibly exerting anti-inflammatory effects[1][2][4][5]. The main active constituents are flavonoids (including vitexin) and proanthocyanidins.
