Fructus mume extract mouthrinse

This investigational Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) mouthrinse, developed by researchers at The University of Hong Kong, contains a 5% aqueous extract of *Fructus mume* (also known as *Prunus mume* or Japanese apricot). It is specifically designed to improve oral health and treat gingivitis in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances. The extract's primary antimicrobial activity is attributed to its organic acid content, which targets oral pathogens such as *Streptococcus mutans*. In a randomized, single-blind, parallel-controlled clinical trial (NCT01637948), the mouthrinse was shown to effectively reduce gingival bleeding and improve gingival health indices over a six-month period, performing comparably to essential oil-based rinses without significantly altering the overall oral microbial profile.
