FSME-IMMUN is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine indicated for active immunization against tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), a viral infection of the brain and spine caused by the tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV). The vaccine is based on the Neudörfl strain of TBEV and is produced using chick embryo fibroblast cells. The virus is inactivated with formaldehyde and adsorbed onto aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. FSME-IMMUN induces neutralizing antibodies that target the envelope protein E of TBEV, preventing viral entry into host cells and facilitating immune clearance. It provides protection against all major subtypes of TBEV circulating globally. Originally developed by Immuno AG (later Baxter International), it has been marketed for over 40 years and acquired by Pfizer in 2014[1][3][4][5][6].
