Overview

**Ftibamzone** (also known as phthiobuzonum or phthiobuzone) is a novel antiviral agent developed by the Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences in the 1970s. It exhibits activity against herpes simplex virus (HSV), particularly HSV type II causing genital herpes and viral skin diseases such as herpes zoster. Due to its poor aqueous solubility, various topical formulations like liniments (often combined with plectranthin, dyclonine, or penciclovir) and creams have been developed using solvents such as propylene glycol, glycerol triacetate, and penetration enhancers like azone to improve stability (over 2 years) and transdermal delivery while maintaining efficacy.
