Overview

Fucitol is a sugar alcohol derived from fucoidan or by the reduction of fucose. It is also known as L-fucitol and 1-deoxy-L-galactitol. Fucitol is a hexose alcohol with the molecular formula C6H14O5 and a molar mass of 166.17 g/mol[1][2][4][6]. It occurs naturally in some plants such as nutmeg and has been reported to have antibacterial activity[2]. In bacteria like Shigella flexneri and Escherichia coli K12, it can interact with enzymes such as L-fucose isomerase (fucI), which converts L-fucose into L-fuculose[1]. There are no approved pharmaceutical indications for fucitol; it is primarily used in research settings.
