**Fucoidan-functionalized thrombolytic discoidal microparticles** are an investigational intravenous, dual-targeted polymeric drug-delivery system for **pulmonary thromboembolism** developed by researchers at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology and Yonsei University. The particles are fabricated as discoidal poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) microparticles using a top-down lithographic process and surface-functionalized with fucoidan, a sulfated marine polysaccharide that binds P-selectin on activated platelets. Their discoidal geometry promotes preferential pulmonary vascular accumulation, while fucoidan supports localization to platelet-rich thrombi; the encapsulated thrombolytic component is intended to activate plasminogen-mediated fibrinolysis and dissolve pulmonary emboli with more localized exposure than systemic thrombolysis.
