Overview
Fufang Dantong is a Chinese patent medicine (CPM) combination product widely used in China for the treatment of hepatobiliary disorders, particularly chronic cholecystitis and cholangitis. The formulation typically consists of the synthetic choleretic agent **hymecromone** (also known as Dantong) in combination with four traditional Chinese medicinal herbs: *Rabdosia serra* (Xihuangcao), *Artemisia capillaris* (Yinchen), *Isatis tinctoria* (Banlangen), and *Rheum palmatum* (Dahuang). Hymecromone acts as a potent choleretic, stimulating bile production and flow, while also exerting spasmolytic effects by relaxing the sphincter of Oddi. The herbal components provide complementary anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and heat-clearing properties, which help alleviate symptoms of dampness-heat syndrome in the gallbladder. It is commonly administered orally in tablet or capsule form and is often used as a standard-of-care control in clinical trials for new hepatobiliary treatments.
